What does a speech pathologist do?

Speech Pathologists assess, treat and manage disorders of;

  • Speech - Saying the words
  • Language - Thinking of the words to say/write, understanding the words spoken/read
  • Voice - The sound and quality of voice
  • Swallow - Chewing, holding and swallowing food and drink 
  • Social communication - Understanding and taking part in social interactions
  • Assisted Communication - Using systems or devices to augment communication

When should I see a speech pathologist?

If you or your loved ones are having difficulty -

  • Speaking words clearly
  • Finding or understanding the words in communication
  • Using your voice to be heard
  • Swallowing food or fluids
  • Taking part socially or understanding unspoken communication
  • Communicating when speech, language, movement or cognition is significantly impaired
